This autumn, Tate Modern opens a window into the vibrant era of Nigerian modern art. The Nigerian Modernism exhibition highlights the generations of artists who emerged before and after Nigeria’s independence in 1960, showcasing their dialogues with global art networks.

The Story of an Artistic Rebellion

The exhibition examines the cultural exchange networks stretching from Zaria, Ibadan, Lagos, and Enugu to London, Munich, and Paris. Groups like the Zaria Art Society and Mbari Artists’ and Writers’ Club blended Nigerian and African artistic traditions with European modernist movements, creating powerful, multi-layered works.

Visitors can explore a comprehensive selection of paintings, sculptures, textiles, and poetry by more than 50 artists. Highlighted names include:

  • Uzo Egonu
  • El Anatsui
  • Ladi Kwali
