After expressing his disdain for AI technology multiple times, Nick Cave has now embraced it in a new video commemorating the 40th anniversary of The Bad Seeds’ iconic track, ‘Tupelo.’
Cave has been a strong critic of AI, previously labeling it “unbelievably disturbing” and warning of its potential to undermine the creative industries. He has voiced concerns about platforms like ChatGPT, saying it should “fuck off and leave songwriting alone” and lamented that some people believe artistic expression can be easily replicated by machines.
In earlier posts on his blog, The Red Hand Files, he shared that he had received numerous fan submissions of lyrics generated “in the style of Nick Cave” via ChatGPT, which he dismissed as “bullshit” and a “grotesque mockery of humanity.”
However, in a surprising turn of events, Cave has collaborated with filmmaker Andrew Dominik, who created the new video for ‘Tupelo’ using AI to animate archival stills of Elvis Presley. Initially skeptical about using AI in the project, Cave changed his perspective after watching the video. He described it as “an extraordinarily profound interpretation” of the song, calling it a touching tribute to both Elvis and the track itself.
Cave noted the AI-enhanced images of Presley gave them an “uncanny quality,” likening it to a resurrection, and he found the final sequences both shocking and deeply moving. Reflecting on the experience, he admitted, “To some extent, my mind was changed.”

In related news, Cave has recently reflected on his personal experiences, discussing the lessons learned from grief, sharing insights on his songwriting process, and explaining his decision to turn down a collaboration with Morrissey. He continues to believe that some of the most impactful music comes from complex individuals, insisting that creativity transcends personal politics.
