Grenzkontrolle: A Radical Response to Germany’s Rightward Political Shift

Founded in Cologne in 2025 as a radical reaction to Germany’s shifting political atmosphere (the “vibe shift” toward the right), Grenzkontrolle quickly became one of the brightest hopes for post-punk across Europe. Led by frontman Don L. Gaspár Ali, the band uses music not merely as a vehicle for rhythm but as a space for social intervention.

Watching Grenzkontrolle live is more than just a concert—it’s a performance art experience. On stage, the group might auction off their own souls with a gavel or read poetry from lyric notebooks; yet they shatter the seemingly “artificial” theatricality of these gestures with the raw power of their sound and words. If you enjoy unsettling feelings (“Störgefühle”) and sounds that shake the status quo, you’ll fall in love with this band.

Lyrics penned by Don L. Gaspár Ali tackle heavy topics: the climate crisis, police violence, the rise of the far right (AfD), rent gouging, and the endless tragedies in the Middle East. The texts are radical, stripped of all ornament, and mobilising—yet never shallow. They masterfully link the deep void of personal existence to societal decay.

One of the band’s most striking releases, the song “Katyperry!”, is a sardonic attack on the absurd world of the super-rich. Responding to Katy Perry’s space trip and similar elitist fantasies with post-punk’s energetic and aggressive tone, the track critiques in a thought-provoking yet tragicomic voice, proving the band’s ability to wield humour as a weapon.

🔗 A Note from Apartment No: 26

Grenzkontrolle fuses the harshness of 1980s Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft (DAF) with the political urgency of the modern era.

The “artificial” atmosphere they project on stage is actually a giant mirror held up to the artificiality of the contemporary world.

“Katyperry!” is one of the sharpest and loudest slaps delivered against mega-stars filling the void of popular culture.
