In the January cold of Berlin, a show that will warm your heart (and perhaps confuse your mind a little) is rising at the heart of Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. The distinctive Roter Salon at Volksbühne, draped in its signature red velvet, is preparing to become the stage for a glittering chaos. Here is the enchanting artist Meo Wulf, shuttling between Berlin, Vienna, and Hamburg, along with her alter ego: Sally!
Sally has a very important task: preparing for a drag reading event planned for “children aged 5 and over.” She wants everything to be perfect. But there’s a problem; her house is a mess, she can’t find her shoes, and time is running out fast. While trying to finish her makeup, Sally reminds herself how kind a person she is in a “rough city” like Berlin.
The show makes us privy to the most vulnerable, funniest, and sometimes most tragic moments in a drag queen’s backstage or bedroom. As Sally tries to rehearse reading books to children, her mind constantly wanders elsewhere: “Is drag art misogynistic?”, “Could I cause children to become lesbian?” or simply “Where is the mate to these shoes?”—such questions turn the preparation process into a full survival struggle.
This performance—written, directed, and single-handedly dominated by Meo Wulf—promises much more than a classic drag show. Adorned with lip-sync numbers and musical transitions, this mad journey is in fact a parody of art, sexuality, and the norms imposed by society. The “threshold of desperation” Sally experiences until her last false nail is glued on offers the audience minutes filled with laughter yet equally thought-provoking.
Although Sally is fictionally trying to appeal to 5-year-old children, let’s issue our warning: This show is for adults! With her brazen performance, Meo Wulf takes the audience in the palm of her hand, while the atmosphere of Roter Salon provides a perfect backdrop for this “wild journey.”
