Masters Beyond Time: Hauser & Wirth’s Selection at Frieze Masters

October 17, 20251 min read

Frieze Masters 2025 in London brings together some of art history’s most creative minds, and Hauser & Wirth’s stand (D01) is a veritable gallery of 20th-century masterpieces. This presentation does more than showcase the past; it serves as a manifesto demonstrating how these masters’ ideas continue to shape contemporary art.

The exhibition features luminaries such as Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, and Arshile Gorky, who embody the transformative power of modern art. Francis Picabia’s vibrant Les rochers à Saint-Honorat (Saint-Honorat Rocks) from the mid-1920s, a work that defies the rules of Dadaism and Surrealism, highlights the artist’s boundless creativity. Also on display are Marcel Duchamp’s conceptually brilliant works and Pablo Picasso’s powerful drawings.

A particularly compelling aspect of Hauser & Wirth’s presentation is a special section curated by Swiss artist Nicolas Party. Party has selected a small group of 19th- and 20th-century figurative paintings that have inspired his own work, illustrating how artistic legacies engage in a contemporary dialogue.

With works by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Lucio Fontana, and Meret Oppenheim, the exhibition offers a striking look at the evolution of 20th-century art, from abstraction to kinetic art.
