Malcolm-Jamal Warner, beloved actor known for his role in The Cosby Show, has sadly passed away at the age of 54.

According to ABC News, Warner drowned accidentally while vacationing with family in Costa Rica on Sunday, July 20. His official cause of death has been determined as asphyxia, as reported by local authorities.

Warner was most famous for his long-running portrayal of Theodore “Theo” Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby’s character, Cliff Huxtable. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Throughout his career, Warner appeared in various television shows, including Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between The Lines, Sons of Anarchy, The Resident, 9-1-1, and made notable appearances in Suits and Community.

In film, he was featured in notable projects like Drop Zone alongside Wesley Snipes and Fool’s Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.

Numerous co-stars have expressed their condolences following Warner’s tragic passing. Angela Bassett, who appeared with him on 9-1-1, shared, “When a special soul like Malcolm-Jamal Warner leaves us far too soon, words fail to express the deep sadness. He was more than a talented actor; he was a dear friend.” She reflected on his lasting impact: “Malcolm was a soulful artist who embraced his cultural legacy with grace and made space for others to shine.”

Tracee Ellis Ross, who played his wife on Reed Between The Lines, posted: “I love you, Malcolm. My heart is so heavy. You were such a warm, kind, and elegant friend who brightened the world.”

Wendell Pierce honored Warner as well, commenting, “He was eternally youthful and possessed a tremendous ability for joy. His passing is a tragic loss for all of us.”
