After a series of sold-out performances in Berlin and Hamburg, along with a critically acclaimed run at the Brighton Fringe in 2025, Kumar Muniandy is bringing his poignant solo play, “Second Class Queer,” to the Camden and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals later this year. This deeply personal piece has garnered numerous accolades for its bold and poetic exploration of queerness, race, grief, and the lasting impacts of colonialism.
“Second Class Queer” immerses audiences in the story of Krishna, a queer Indian Malaysian man navigating Berlin’s dynamic queer dating scene while confronting the intense emotional burdens of displacement and desire. Written, performed, designed, and produced by Muniandy himself, the play seamlessly intertwines raw storytelling with theatrical intimacy, amplifying the voices of queer individuals often overlooked by history.
The production has already achieved notable recognition, including a nomination for the Best New Show Award at Brighton Fringe 2025 and being shortlisted for scripted works at prestigious venues such as the Royal Court and The Bush Theatre. It has also received the Brighton Fringe’s 2025 Mental Health Bursary and the Keep It Fringe Award 2025, underscoring its essential themes and powerful execution.
“This work is a tribute, a protest, and an offering,” Muniandy shares, dedicating the play to Nhaveen, an 18-year-old Malaysian who tragically lost his life in a suspected homophobic attack in 2017.
Critics have praised the production, with Andrew Kay from Latest TV calling it “perfectly formed, powerfully delivered, and worth seeing again and again,” awarding it five stars. Brian Butler of Gscene also gave it five stars, lauding it as “a terrific performance—full of humanity, honesty, and razor-sharp timing.”
“Second Class Queer” will be staged at Theatro Technis during the Camden Fringe from July 30th to August 1st, with various evening showtimes, before moving to C aquila as part of C venues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing daily from August 11th to 17th at 12:00 PM.
