James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, recently shared his thoughts on why the film industry is facing challenges, citing poor quality and “unfinished screenplays” as key factors.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn expressed his concern that many movies are being rushed into production without having a finalized script. He stated, “I believe the movie industry is not dying because people don’t want to watch films or because home screens have become too good. The main issue is filmmakers are proceeding without a completed screenplay.”
Gunn is so passionate about the importance of quality scripts that he revealed he recently “killed a project” over this very issue. He emphasized his commitment to only moving forward with projects that have strong, polished screenplays, saying, “Although everyone was eager to make the film and it had been greenlit, the screenplay wasn’t ready. I couldn’t proceed with a project that wasn’t solid.”
Comparing DC Studios to Marvel, Gunn mentioned that he feels his studio has an advantage in the competitive superhero genre due to less pressure from its parent company, Warner Bros. He noted that Disney’s approach to churning out more content for Marvel ultimately “killed them.” According to Gunn, “At DC Studios, we don’t have a mandate to produce a certain number of movies and TV shows each year. We’re committed to quality and won’t release anything until I’m satisfied with the screenplay.”
Gunn’s latest project, the upcoming installment of Superman, is set to hit theaters on July 11th.
