James Gunn Discusses Potential Superman-Batman Collaboration

July 30, 20252 min read

James Gunn recently addressed the possibility of Robert Pattinson’s Batman teaming up with David Corenswet’s Superman in a new film.

While attending the 2025 Comic-Con, Gunn shared insights with Entertainment Tonight about this exciting prospect. He was prompted to consider a sequel following the positive reception of the recent Superman film, which hit theaters earlier this month and has become a box office success, raking in $426 million worldwide (approximately £314 million).

In this latest installment, David Corenswet steps into the role of Superman for the first time, succeeding Henry Cavill, who portrayed the character in Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017). Cavill also made a cameo in Black Adam (2022) before stepping away from Gunn’s revamped DC Universe.

Robert Pattinson is set to return as Batman in The Batman 2, the sequel to his 2022 debut, scheduled for release in October 2027. Gunn confirmed that although he has discussed the idea of a crossover with Pattinson, he is not ready to move forward with it just yet. “I’ve met him before, and we’ve talked about it, but it’s not what’s happening right now,” he explained to ET. “Everything is in flux, so we’ll figure out what we’re doing next.”

Additionally, there’s talk of another Batman-related project titled The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce the Damian Wayne version of Robin. Gunn noted that the team is still in the early stages of development and shared, “We’re working on a script. We have a screenwriter diligently crafting it. I’m very involved, and we’ll see what happens next. I wish I had more news.”

Gunn participated in Comic-Con 2025 to promote the upcoming second season of Peacemaker, set for release next month, and his next feature film, Supergirl, is slated for 2026.

Critics noted, “Gunn creates a world that closely resembles the classic DC Comics Superman, enhanced by characters like the shapeshifting Metamorpho. It provides a promising starting point for his vision of the DC Universe.” The review concluded with a playful wish for more appearances from Superman’s canine companion, Krypto.
