The Humboldt Forum hosts the Going Through Hell exhibition until October 2025, presenting a remarkable masterpiece of Korean art to enthusiasts. This exhibition spotlights a rare hanging scroll from the Goryeo period (918–1392), one of only about 160 surviving examples worldwide. Part of the State Museums’ Asian Art Museum collection, this treasured work uniquely depicts Bodhisattva Jijang and the Ten Kings of Hell.
A Korean interpretation of a painting tradition originating in China’s Tang dynasty, this 14th-century scroll showcases the richness and refinement of Goryeo-era Korean art. Its meticulous and sophisticated details reflect the opulent world of Goryeo’s ruling elite. Delicate vine patterns in gold and ornaments inspired by flora and fauna elevate the work into a singular piece of art.
This extraordinary piece underwent its first comprehensive study as part of an interdisciplinary research project by the State Museums and the Rathgen Research Laboratory in 2023–2024.
The exhibition goes beyond a visual experience, embracing a multisensory approach. It features specially composed music evoking the Goryeo period and two short animated films providing insights into the era and the research project.
