Full Cast Announced for Indhu Rubasingham’s Debut National Theatre Production, ‘Bacchae’

July 18, 20253 min read

The National Theatre has unveiled the complete cast for “Bacchae,” a highly anticipated adaptation by Nima Taleghani (of Heartstopper fame). This production marks an important milestone as it will be the first play staged at the renowned Olivier Theatre under the direction of Indhu Rubasingham, who is stepping into her role as the National Theatre’s new Director. “Bacchae” is expected to usher in a fresh era for the institution, blending anarchic energy with spoken word and rhyme.

A Contemporary Take with a Star-Studded Cast

Running from September 13 to November 1, 2025, in the Olivier Theatre, this modern interpretation of Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy features a remarkable cast. Notable actors include James McArdle (Angels in America), Clare Perkins (The Wife of Willesden), Ukweli Roach (Wolf), and Sharon Small (Nye). They will be joined by an impressive ensemble that features Melanie-Joyce Bermudez, Ebony Clarke, Natasha Gooden, Sam Jenkins-Shaw, Kate Ivory Jordan, Arethajay McEwen, Fi Silverthorn, Simon Startin, Jessey Stol, Roman Asde, Elèna Gyasi, Reuben Johnson, Tyreke Leslie, Natasha Magigi, Ellie McKay, Ellie-May Sheridan, Anna Russell-Martin, and Amanda Wilkin.

Rubasingham’s Vision for a New Era

Expressing her enthusiasm for her debut production, Indhu Rubasingham stated, “I can’t wait to step into the rehearsal room and begin my journey as Director of the National Theatre. Nima’s dynamic retelling of Euripides’ classic is an exhilarating play that will fill the Olivier’s amphitheatre with spoken word and rhythm. ‘Bacchae’ will be an extravaganza of words, music, and movement.”

The creative team backing this production is equally impressive, featuring set and costume design by Robert Jones, choreography by Kate Prince, and an original score by DJ Walde. Rubasingham emphasized the importance of reinvention, noting that “telling ancient stories with a modern voice has long been a hallmark of the National Theatre.”

Exploring Chaos and Catharsis in Thebes

“Bacchae” delves into themes of chaos and control as Dionysos, the god of revelry, seeks revenge on his cousin King Pentheus. The evocative Bacchae, described as “stage-storming powerhouses,” wreak havoc in the mountains, ready to unleash chaos in Thebes. This narrative promises a compelling exploration of power, identity, and the untamed aspects of human nature.

Tickets for “Bacchae” are now available starting at £20 via the National Theatre’s website. A press performance is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025. This production heralds a bold and exciting new chapter in Rubasingham’s directorship, ensuring a vibrant and contemporary theatrical experience.
