Landscape has always been a source of inspiration and freedom for artists. In his autobiography, William Heath Robinson expressed this passion with the words: “Living outdoors and communing with nature… I am in love with the life of a landscape painter.” Yet his landscape art is rarely seen. The “Sublime Space” exhibition traces this passion, placing Heath Robinson’s works alongside those of ten contemporary artists to interrogate landscape as a space for creative thought.
The exhibition features names such as David Inshaw, William Scott, Ray Richardson, and Jemma Powell. Landscape, approached through walking, observation, and imagination, transcends mere aesthetic experience to become a window into emotional, intellectual, and socio-political concerns. Especially at a time when 93% of UK land is privately owned, the importance of the shared 7% of natural space grows ever greater.
The artists explore these themes through diverse media:
- Ray Richardson’s works offer cinematic snapshots, pointing to stories beyond the picture frame.
- Jonathan McCree’s large organic sculptures encourage viewers to move through the forms.
- David Inshaw’s paintings blend magical, dreamlike realism with pastoral scenes.
- Peter Coyte digitally manipulates sounds recorded in the Thames estuary—where Turner once painted—creating a nostalgic journey in digital space.
“Sublime Space” reveals how concepts of nature, space, and the sublime have evolved. The exhibition proves that, despite contemporary anxieties, art can help us reconnect with the world around us.
