The trailer for the third season of The Diplomat has brought back two beloved former co-stars from The West Wing, with Bradley Whitford joining the cast.
From 1999 to 2006, Whitford portrayed White House Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in the political drama, alongside Allison Janney. In this new season of Netflix’s The Diplomat, which follows Keri Russell as a U.S. diplomat navigating international crises in the UK, Janney returns as the U.S. Vice President.
The end of season two saw the death of the previous President (played by Michael McKean), paving the way for Janney’s character, Grace Penn, to take over as the new leader. Whitford joins the narrative as her husband, now the First Gentleman, complicating the dynamics between Penn and Russell’s character, Kate Wyler, who suspects a terrorist plot.
The trailer opens with an emotional embrace between the two actors, a moment likely to evoke nostalgia among West Wing fans who recognize their earlier connection. Both actors have won Emmys for their roles on the show, which propelled them to successful careers in film and television. Janney even earned an Oscar for her performance in I, Tonya, while Whitford recently wrapped up his role in the acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale.
The Diplomat Season Three is set to premiere this Autumn on Netflix. Since its debut in 2023, the show has resonated well with audiences, with one fan describing it as “Witty, timely, and thoroughly compelling with one of the best ensembles in recent memory.”
In September, West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin attended a 25th-anniversary celebration of the show at The White House, hinting at the possibility of a reboot. “I didn’t think about it seriously, frankly, until today… We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow,” he remarked.
