Ruzy Gallery hosts Formative, a group exhibition bringing together diverse disciplines such as painting, sculpture, and tapestry. Curated by Thom Oosterhof, the exhibition draws inspiration from a quote by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar:
“People can sometimes be the reflection of things they are unaware of.”
This statement shapes the exhibition’s central question: Does a work of art solely emerge from the artist’s hand, or does the artist, in the process, also transform into what they create?
Formative redefines the relationship between the artist and the creative process. Each work in the exhibition begins with the artist’s intent but gradually gains its own agency, becoming an active participant in the act of creation. Thus, the relationship between artist and artwork evolves from control into a dialogue.
Painting, sculpture, and weaving in this exhibition are not merely tools; they become collaborators that shape the process and guide the artist’s direction. Through the repetitive movements of pigment, form, or texture, a continuous cycle of interaction emerges between the artist’s hand and mind.
Inviting visitors to reflect, Formative revolves around these questions:
What happens when a work begins to shape its creator?
What if creation is not just an expression but the very act of transformation?
This exhibition is for those who wish to trace the echoes of objects returning to their creators.
