HBO has unveiled the first look at Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid in the highly anticipated new Harry Potter TV series—check it out here!
Just a day after fans saw Dominic McLaughlin as the iconic wizard, Nick Frost, known for his role in Spaced, was revealed in full costume. He steps into the shoes of the late Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in the original film series.
“Everyone ready? Here we go!” HBO Max shared on Instagram, announcing that Frost has donned Hagrid’s big boots on set for the new HBO Original series.
Reactions from fans have been mixed. One commented on Instagram, “This might be the best casting in a long time,” while another expressed skepticism on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It’s just too early for me. It looks like they’re all cosplaying.”
Some fans noted the production’s polished aesthetic, with one stating, “The makeup and costume design seem overly refined, like a fashion shoot for Harry Potter. I’m not loving it.” Another remarked, “The original can’t be beaten; the new one looks like he’s wearing a wig.”
Filming for the first season began yesterday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, the same location used for the films. The show is slated to premiere early next year, with plans to span a decade, allowing for deeper exploration of the source material.
Additional cast members announced include Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and others in key roles.
Nick Frost has previously expressed his desire to be “very protective” of the child actors in the series. “As a dad myself, I will be very protective, which I think reflects Hagrid’s relationship with the children in the story,” he shared. “It’s an incredible experience to be a part of this and really bring Hagrid to life.”
In related news, Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco Malfoy in the films, has recently returned to the role in the Broadway production of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
