First Look: Brendan Gleeson in The Weir – Theatre News

August 12, 20252 min read

Get ready for a sneak peek of Brendan Gleeson as Jack in The Weir, a production penned and directed for the first time by Conor McPherson, ahead of its preview in Dublin.

The play will take the stage at the Harold Pinter Theatre from September 12 to December 6, 2025, with its press night set for September 19, following its earlier performances at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin, running from August 8 to September 6.

Gleeson, known for his roles in The Banshees of Inisherin and Paddington 2, makes his West End debut as Jack. He is joined by an impressive cast, including Owen McDonnell (known for Bad Sisters and Killing Eve) as Brendan, Seán McGinley (from That They May Face the Rising Sun and The Brightening Air) as Jim, Kate Phillips (from Peaky Blinders and Wolf Hall) as Valerie, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (from Dancing at Lughnasa and Say Nothing) as Finbar.

The Weir will first be performed at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre from August 8 to September 6, before moving to the West End. Tickets for the London run are currently available at theweirplay.com, with 10,000 seats priced at £30 and under—3,000 of which are reserved for under 30s and blue light workers within the Stalls, Dress Circle, and Royal Circle.

Set on a stormy night, the play brings four local men together in a remote Irish pub. Their evening of familiar chatter takes a turn with the arrival of Valerie, whose presence inspires them to share captivating stories that are both eerie and unsettling. Unbeknownst to them, Valerie has a deeply personal tale to unfold, one that will leave a lasting impact on all present.

The Weir ultimately highlights humanity’s need for connection, the flicker of hope, and the profound influence of storytelling.
