The story centers on Joseph De Rocher, convicted of the brutal murder of two teenagers and awaiting execution by lethal injection. While Joseph maintains his innocence, Sister Helen Prejean offers him spiritual guidance and simultaneously bears witness to the unbearable pain of the victims’ families, torn apart by his unforgivable crimes. Will Sister Helen secure the confession the families deserve, or will Joseph cling to his innocence until the end? This conflicted drama invites the audience into the most intricate knots of justice, sin, and faith.
Jake Heggie—named Musical America’s 2025 Composer of the Year—envelops the tension behind the bars of this high-security U.S. prison in an elegant and melancholic tone. Directed by Annilese Miskimmon, the production features master performers including Christine Rice, Michael Mayes, and Dame Sarah Connolly.
