Erik Schmidt: “The Rise and Fall” Exhibition”

October 6, 20251 min read

📍 KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Maschinenhaus M2

📅 On view through February 1, 2026

Berlin-based artist Erik Schmidt (b. 1968, Herford) presents a multifaceted exhibition at KINDL, spanning four decades of work across painting, drawing, photography, video, and performance. The Rise and Fall of Erik Schmidt constructs a personal portrait of the artist’s queer identity, community, and individuality while offering a sharp and ironic critique of societal norms, social structures, and power dynamics.

The exhibition highlights Schmidt’s aesthetic of excess, repetition, and layering. His works, ranging from body politics to everyday objects, question norms with a language that is at times ruthless, at times humorous. This layered approach underscores the intersection of the artist’s personal history and collective memory.

Erik Schmidt’s exhibition lays bare the tension between individual and societal identities with a keen perspective unique to Berlin’s contemporary art scene.
