The highly anticipated trailer for It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, a documentary celebrating the life of the iconic musician, has just premiered online.
Since Jeff Buckley’s untimely passing in May 1997 at the age of 30, there have been numerous attempts to create a film about his life. This documentary is noteworthy as it offers the first authorized insight into his journey, revealing that his mother once turned down an offer for Brad Pitt to portray Jeff in a biopic.
Directed by Amy Berg, the film combines archival footage and new interviews with Buckley’s family and peers. The two-minute trailer features heartfelt reflections from his mother, Mary Guibert, as well as memories shared by his partners, bandmates, and artists like Aimee Mann and Ben Harper, who comment on his extraordinary talent, personality, and achievements. Jeff’s own voice carries through as he humorously shares, “My main influences? Love, anger, depression, and Zeppelin.”
The trailer also delves into more serious themes, especially regarding his relationship with his father, musician Tim Buckley, who passed away in 1975 when Jeff was just a child. When asked what he inherited from his father, Jeff’s chilling response was, “People who remember my father – next question.”
In addition to personal reflections, the trailer contains haunting quotations about his awareness of mortality. One interviewee recalls him stating, “I’m not gonna last that long.” The trailer closes with Jeff asserting, “I’ve been wrong, and completely ugly, I’ve been beautiful, I’ve been totally in love, I’ve been hideous, but I’ve never been dead.”
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley is set to hit U.S. theaters on August 8 and will be available for streaming on HBO Max this winter. While there is no release date for the UK yet, the film premiered at Sundance in January to glowing reviews and currently boasts a 100% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
