Emma Stone’s Unexpected Outburst on Set

May 30, 20252 min read

Sometimes, the path to creativity requires us to let go of control and embrace our most primal instincts. While some actors rely on structured routines and rituals to connect with their characters, others, like Daniel Day-Lewis and Jared Leto, fully immerse themselves in their roles, losing themselves in their inner worlds.

However, tapping into these depths isn’t always easy without resorting to extreme methods. Some directors use a range of tactics to elicit raw performances from their actors. For instance, David O. Russell may dominate with intense shouting, while William Friedkin has been known to resort to extreme physicality. Stanley Kubrick employed psychological tactics, pushing his actors to the edge to evoke sincere performances.

Emma Stone had a memorable experience working with the renowned director Alejandro González Iñárritu during the production of Birdman. This film, notable for its one-take filming style, follows a struggling actor trying to revive his career on Broadway, with Stone playing the role of Sam.

In one particularly intense rooftop scene, Stone found herself mentally and emotionally drained after multiple takes. Describing her experience, she recalled, “Edward Norton and I were on the rooftop at around 2 AM. After filming the scene about 30 times, Alejandro wasn’t getting what he wanted, and I started to panic. I thought, ‘I can’t take this anymore.’ But then something shifted in me. Instead of trying to please everyone, I decided to let go and just be in the moment.”

Her breakthrough led to a frenetic performance that ultimately earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Stone discovered that sometimes, releasing control and embracing vulnerability can lead to extraordinary results. This unconventional approach not only resonated with Iñárritu but also captured the chaotic essence of his vision, proving that allowing one’s emotions to surface can be a powerful creative tool.
