A new photography exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, titled Hip Hop: Living A Dream, honors the multifaceted world of hip hop, showcasing the genre’s rich history. From Eminem getting inked during his Slim Shady phase to a glamorous Mike Tyson reveling in a lavish Las Vegas getaway, this exhibit captures the essence of hip hop in all its glory.
Following its successful debut in Cologne, the exhibition features the work of renowned American photographers Jamel Shabazz, Joseph Rodriguez, and Gregory Bojorquez. Together, they present a visual journey through hip hop culture on the East and West Coasts and beyond.
Spanning two expansive spaces in the prestigious gallery, the exhibition explores the music, fashion, attitude, and lifestyle that define hip hop. It traces the genre’s humble beginnings in 1970s New York and celebrates its explosion into the world’s dominant genre, reshaping global music and pop culture.
At the opening, Bojorquez shared with Euronews Culture, “I began at underground hip hop shows in small venues where press passes weren’t necessary. Back then, not many were photographing these events, leading to opportunities from record labels and magazines. I just aimed to give my best each time.” Reflecting on his career, he noted, “Those artists, now global icons, were once part of a subculture. I recognized their raw talent early on; it just took the world a bit longer to notice.”
Gallery owner Bene Taschen highlights the global importance of hip hop: “Originating over 50 years ago, its influence has spread worldwide. It’s more than just music; it embodies fashion, lifestyle, and art, inspiring millions—if not billions—across generations.”
As visitors walk through the exhibition, they’ll encounter intimate portraits of hip hop legends like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Outkast, DMX, and 50 Cent. There are also heartfelt images of everyday fans whose enthusiasm has contributed to the genre’s enduring legacy.
The best part? Admission to the exhibition is entirely free! It runs until September 10, 2025, making it a must-see for anyone interested in the vibrant world of hip hop.
