Double Act at Southwark Playhouse: A Powerful Exploration of Mental Health

August 4, 20251 min read

It’s not often we encounter a production that tackles serious themes with such a delicate touch as Nick Hyde’s Double Act. This compelling play thoughtfully addresses mental health issues, following a man’s last-day journey filled with determination and doubt.

Performers Nick Hyde and Oliver Maynard represent two facets of the same character, showcasing an extraordinary level of trust and talent. Instead of the typical approach of having one play the man and the other his inner thoughts, they present a complex dynamic that enriches the narrative. Their quick-change black and white clown make-up serves as a fragile mask, symbolizing the duality of their performances as they navigate the heavy emotional landscape of someone contemplating suicide.

As the man travels to the coast, Hyde and Maynard seamlessly slip into various characters he encounters, including a bittersweet farewell dinner at McDonald’s with his ex and a humorous yet poignant train ride during which he finds himself unable to buy a ticket. Even with an envelope full of savings in his pocket, he feels lost.

Director Jef Hall-Flavin expertly manages the balance of humor and gravity throughout the performance. The minimalist yet effective staging designed by Christophe Eynde and the thoughtful lighting by Holly Ellis enhance the production’s overall impact.

This 90-minute masterpiece is a striking blend of physical and emotional performance that will linger in the minds of all who experience it.
