Irish actor Cillian Murphy takes on the compelling role of a headteacher in Steve, an upcoming Netflix drama set to captivate audiences with its raw emotional depth. Directed by Tim Mielants, the film is a poignant adaptation of Max Porter’s bestselling novel Shy, exploring the challenges of a reform school in mid-1990s England.
The story unfolds over a single, pivotal day at a last-chance reform school, where Murphy’s character, Steve, battles to save the institution from closure while grappling with his own mental health struggles. The narrative also follows Shy, a troubled teenager played by Jay Lycurgo (I May Destroy You), who wrestles with his past and destructive impulses. The film weaves together their parallel journeys, highlighting the complexities of guiding young lives in a world that seems to have turned its back on them.
The trailer offers a glimpse into Steve’s exhausting reality, with Murphy’s character describing himself as “very, very tired” amidst scenes of student conflicts and personal turmoil. Moments of intensity, such as Steve drinking from a small bottle and letting out a primal scream, underscore the weight of his responsibilities.
Joining Murphy is a stellar supporting cast, including Tracey Ullman as Amanda and Emily Watson, who previously collaborated with Murphy in the acclaimed Irish drama Small Things Like These. The ensemble also features rising talents like Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy) and Roger Allam (Endeavour).
Murphy, who also serves as a producer on the project, brings his signature intensity to the role, fresh off his BAFTA and Oscar wins for Oppenheimer. Fans can also look forward to his return as Tommy Shelby in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, also slated for Netflix.
Steve will have a limited theatrical release starting September 19 before streaming globally on Netflix from October 3. This moving drama promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of resilience, redemption, and the human spirit.
