South Asian Heritage Month, recognized internationally, takes place annually from July 18 to August 17. This special month celebrates the rich tapestry of South Asian culture through various events, parties, and festivities.
South Asia comprises nations like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Notably, South Asians represent 20% of London’s population, which makes the city a vibrant hub for South Asian culture, celebrated through food, music, and community gatherings.
This year’s theme, “Roots to Routes,” will be reflected in an exciting lineup of cultural events across London. From exclusive film screenings to traditional melas (festivals), here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss:
The Cinnamon Bazaar Chaat Challenge
Join the competition at Cinnamon Bazaar in Richmond, where acclaimed chef Vivek Singh invites you to participate in the pani puri eating challenge. For just £10, fans of this popular snack can attempt to consume 50 pani puris as quickly as possible for a chance to win a year’s supply of chaat. Last year’s leaderboard was incredibly competitive, so bring your appetite!
Bollywood Mela at Camden Market
Camden Market is hosting a vibrant Bollywood Mela over two days, celebrating South Asian culture with music and dance performances, family activities, food stalls, giant puppets, rickshaws, henna, and face painting. This outdoor festival is perfect for families and promises a fun-filled experience with plenty to see and do.

Saroj Patel’s Mural at Canary Wharf
Artist Saroj Patel has transformed the Crossrail Place Roof Gardens in Canary Wharf with a stunning mural featuring hand-sewn flags to commemorate South Asian Heritage Month. Location: Crossrail Place Roof Gardens, E14 5AB (Open until August 17).
Trishna’s Western Ghats Menu
While many Indian restaurants in the UK focus on northern cuisine, Trishna is spotlighting the lesser-known flavors of the Western Ghats region with a specially crafted menu. Dishes include pepper prawn chukka, chicken chop ghee roast, and beef short rib coconut fry, showcasing the region’s rich culinary diversity. Executive chef Sajeev Nair draws inspiration from his Kerala roots, aiming to bring the vibrant flavors of the Western Ghats to London’s dining scene.
With these activities and celebrations, South Asian Heritage Month in London promises to be an enriching experience that honors the community’s contributions and cultural heritage.
