The plot of “Pluribus” revolves around Carol Sturka’s (Rhea Seehorn) largely one-sided struggle against the hive mind. In the latest episode, Carol believes she has finally found the key piece of information that will allow her to take control of the hive mind: a cold-storage warehouse filled with vacuum-sealed human body parts intended for consumption. But a trip to Koumba Diabaté’s (Samba Schutte) new base in Las Vegas quickly turns her “righteous outrage” upside down.

Being far more attuned to the hive mind than Carol, Koumba proves to have vastly more knowledge. This means Carol’s “cannibalism” discovery is actually old news. The hive mind’s reluctance to wipe out all animal and plant life has forced it to resort to using dead human bodies as a food source.
This absurd revelation leads to one of the most shocking and hilarious moments in “Pluribus” so far: Koumba plays a video explaining the situation, and on screen appears a globally famous face: “Peacemaker” star John Cena.
Cena’s presence in the video explaining this “situational cannibalism” reveals the series’ true potential: the hive mind can literally use anyone on Earth. While the show has previously chosen even a White House representative as an unnamed figure, casting an A-list celebrity like Cena for such a crucial explanation demonstrates the sheer power of the hive’s communication strategy.
John Cena’s appearance is anything but random; it perfectly encapsulates “Pluribus’s” cameo rules: the appearance has to make sense within the context. In real life, Cena is famously the celebrity who has granted the most wishes through the Make-a-Wish Foundation. That makes him the ideal archetype of a trustworthy, good-natured guy the hive mind would choose to explain a tough topic like cannibalism to a hard case like Carol.
The earlier appearance of Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller in a scene further proves that the series only uses famous faces when they fit the story’s local or thematic context. After this shocking reveal, it’s only a matter of time before fans start making “Pluribus” cameo bingo cards.
