Edinburgh Fringe Festival fixture and Scotsman Fringe-First award winner Bob Kingdom is set to return to the spotlight with his acclaimed one-man show, “The Truman Capote Talk Show.” Presented by Richard Jordan Productions in partnership with The Pleasance, this captivating performance will take place at The Pleasance Courtyard (Attic) from July 30 to August 25, with press performances commencing on July 31.
This celebrated production offers a compelling look at the legendary American novelist, screenwriter, playwright, and actor, Truman Capote. Kingdom masterfully portrays a man wrestling with the tension between extraordinary creative brilliance and a self-destructive nature. The show explores Capote’s remarkable early successes, including “Other Voices, Other Rooms,” “In Cold Blood,” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” while juxtaposing these achievements with his dramatic decline following the controversial release of “Answered Prayers,” a scandalous expose of Manhattan’s elite that led to Capote’s swift social ostracization. Ultimately, he found himself on the fringes of society, observing instead of engaging, amidst figures like Andy Warhol, and descending into addiction.
Critics have celebrated Kingdom’s performance, with The Guardian noting it as “A terrific script, tight, funny, poignant, and filled with memorable one-liners.” The New York Times described it as a “tour-de-force.” Fans of Capote, the legendary and provocative figure, will revel in this insightful exploration of an obsessively creative, yet destructively troubled soul, speaking from beyond the grave.
Bob Kingdom is a highly esteemed writer and performer in the UK, known for his engrossing solo performances. Beyond his portrayal of Capote, he has also embodied notable characters such as Stan Laurel, Dylan Thomas (in Anthony Hopkins’ directorial debut), Elsa Edgar, Edward, Duke of Windsor, and Evelyn Waugh. His longstanding collaboration with producer Richard Jordan has produced a remarkable body of work, receiving international acclaim.
