Alabama Shakes Unveils ‘Another Life’ – Their First New Track in a Decade

September 1, 20253 min read

Alabama Shakes has just released their first new song in ten years—take a listen below!

The band, featuring Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, and Zac Cockrell, went on hiatus in 2018, marking this as their return to the music scene.

Their new single, “Another Life,” dropped on Friday, August 29, and showcases a deeper exploration into 1960s British soul and rock influences. In a recent interview with NPR, Howard likened the song to the style of Tom Jones.

“When I wrote ‘Another Life,’ I was reflecting on all the lives we carry—the present ones, the paths we didn’t take, and those divine chance encounters,” Howard explained. “This track connects the different versions of ourselves through time and space. It’s about bringing those experiences together and understanding that saying goodbye isn’t always final—it’s more like a ‘see you later.’ It’s a continuous story that’s always unfolding. I’m thrilled to be making music together again.”

Listen to the song below.

Since their hiatus, Howard has released two solo albums: 2019’s “Jaime” and 2023’s “What Now.” In December, Alabama Shakes made a surprising reunion after over seven years at a show in Alabama. Originally scheduled as a solo performance, Howard brought her bandmates on stage for a special surprise.

In January, they hinted at new music by sharing photos from the studio, telling fans they were “working on some exciting stuff!”

Currently, the band is operating as a trio, with former drummer Steve Johnson absent. Johnson faced serious legal issues in 2021 but was cleared of charges by December 2021.

Alabama Shakes is now in the midst of their North American reunion tour. Check out the remaining dates below and grab your tickets here.
