A Unique Interpretation of “Hamlet”: A Heartfelt and Joyful Adaptation by Actors with Down Syndrome

Neighbor, would you like me to read the news to you?

Teatro La Plaza’s Peruvian production of Hamlet, which received widespread acclaim at the Edinburgh International Festival last year, offers a completely different experience from traditional interpretations. All the actors in the production are individuals with Down syndrome, and they bring Shakespeare’s text to life by connecting it with their own lives.

However, don’t expect a heavy performance; this adaptation is more a joyful commentary on Hamlet than a direct rendition of the play itself. This special production, lasting just 1 hour and 35 minutes, provides the audience with both a deep and hopeful experience. The performance will be staged at the Barbican Centre from April 24 to 27, 2025.
