A Tribute to Mustafa Ata’s 60-Year Artistic Journey: “Askıda / Suspended” Collection Exhibition

October 5, 20252 min read

The Askıda / Suspended collection exhibition, a tribute to master painter Mustafa Ata’s nearly 60-year artistic journey, opened with a special invitation on Sunday evening, September 28. Hosted at the artist’s living and working space, Anıt Atölye in Şile’s Meşrutiyet Mahallesi, the exhibition welcomes art enthusiasts and will remain open to visitors until October 12, 2025.

The opening saw the attendance of numerous prominent figures from the art and media worlds, with the exhibition standing out as a highlight of the parallel events for the 18th Istanbul Biennial.

Exhibition Highlights

Curated by the artist’s wife, Gönül Karakan Ata, the exhibition brings together works from various periods.

  • Alongside Ata’s paintings and paper works, his never-before-seen stained glass pieces (Askıda Akışkan Bedenler / Suspended Fluid Bodies) offer visitors a new realm of discovery.
  • The exhibition showcases a broad creative process, spanning figurative paintings, abstract brushstrokes, canvases, and experimental paper works.

“Askıda” in Ata’s Art

The Askıda series, developed from 2014 to the present, reflects an evolving creative process. Initially focused on canvas, this body of work has transitioned into more experimental paper pieces, adopting an increasingly abstract structure. Ata’s paintings, built on color, space, and movement, merge with three-dimensional stained glass works in this exhibition, inviting viewers to explore new dimensions of thought.

Art and Life Intertwined

Mustafa Ata’s works reflect not only an artistic practice but also a way of life surrounded by nature, animals, and vibrant colors. Held at Anıt Atölye, this exhibition offers visitors the chance to experience art and life under one roof.
