The Berlin BBA Award Exhibition has firmly anchored itself in the city’s cultural calendar. But what lies behind this success? A decade ago, two artists, Renata Kudlacek and Vishal Shah, set out with a dream to breathe new life into the art world. Their goal was not just to establish a gallery but, in Vishal Shah’s words, to “expand the boundaries of thought.” And they succeeded! As BBA prepares to celebrate its tenth anniversary with fervor, we spoke with co-founder Melis Omalar about this inspiring journey.
A Bold Beginning Breaking the Mold
It all began ten years ago as an artist-driven initiative. Drawing inspiration from their own experiences as artists, Renata and Vishal had firsthand knowledge of the barriers faced by talents outside the “traditional mold.” Their mission was clear: to tear down those walls and build bridges between artists and audiences. They created a platform that sidelined criteria like degrees or mentorship from renowned figures, focusing solely on the power of the work itself. Your age or background didn’t matter—what mattered was the story you told.
A Decade of Evolution: A Shifting Vision
What started as a “revolutionary” step has grown into a beacon of creativity. Today, BBA welcomes artists from 18-year-old prodigies to seasoned masters in their 60s, hosting 20-30 nationalities each year. Alongside the BBA Artist Award and BBA Photography Award, this year saw the introduction of the Berlin Art Award, with online exhibitions transcending geographical boundaries. For BBA, the priority is supporting the long-term growth of participating artists.
A 10th Anniversary Surprise and a Rigorous Selection Process
And now, a grand celebration is on the horizon for the 10th anniversary! Though details remain under wraps, this exhibition, spanning three floors of Kühlhaus, is poised to be BBA’s largest event yet—expecting over 3,500 art enthusiasts! It’s also a heartfelt thank-you to the artists, curators, and partners who have supported them over the past decade.
How are the fortunate few chosen from thousands of applications? For the jury, it’s a demanding marathon requiring time and dedication. Comprising members with artist or collector backgrounds, the jury empathizes with the challenges artists face, prioritizing the artist’s mission and the value of their work.
An Award That Changes Lives
What does BBA’s impact mean for an artist? Though the founders remain humble, they know it can transform a career. Their aim isn’t a one-off spotlight but a lasting partnership. “Even if we don’t represent you, we commit to doing everything we can,” they say. For many artists shut out by traditional routes, BBA offers invaluable support and a boost of confidence. Recognizing that an artist’s greatest obstacle is often self-doubt, BBA provides a safe harbor.
A Legacy for the Future
“We’re truly proud to have challenged the art world in Germany,” says Vishal Shah. “We’d like to believe we’ve fundamentally changed how galleries present themselves.” And they signal that this journey is just beginning.
