150th Anniversary of the Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival: London’s Most Vibrant Tradition

In the heart of London, a unique celebration adorned with thousands of shimmering buttons and overflowing with street music returns. The Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival kicks off at Guildhall Yard on Sunday, September 21, 2025, carrying special significance this year: the tradition’s 150th anniversary.

The Pearly Kings and Queens tradition began in the 1870s when Henry Croft decorated his work clothes with thousands of mother-of-pearl buttons to raise money for charity. Since then, the “pearlies” have become one of London’s most iconic communities, embodying charity, unity, and festivity.

At the festival, pearly kings, queens, and princesses from across London will light up the square with their handcrafted buttoned costumes. Maypole and morris dancing, paired with Cockney tunes like The Lambeth Walk and Knees Up Mother Brown, will create a timeless festive atmosphere.

At 2:30 p.m., the pearliesz will join mayors, scouts, Chelsea Pensioners, and an 80-strong rock choir for a procession to St Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside. The harvest service, starting at 3:00 p.m., will feature the traditional offering of a plaited loaf. While the church service is open to the public, arriving early is advised due to expected crowds.

Best of all, the festival is completely free! Still, don’t forget that the pearliesz will be collecting donations for charity, as always. When a pearly hat is extended, it’s best not to let it pass empty.

As Clive Bennett, Pearly King of Woolwich, puts it: “This event is a symbol of our city’s resilience and diversity. We invite everyone to join us for a day filled with fun, cultural heritage, and togetherness.”

📍 Location: Guildhall Yard, City of London
