Small size, big idea. Flowers Gallery is once again placing the concept of “scale” at the heart of art with the 43rd edition of its annual “Small is Beautiful” exhibition, which it has been organizing since 1974. This year, contemporary artists from around the world have been invited to create works that fit within a mere 7 x 9 inches.
Small Format, Big Imagination
“Small is Beautiful” opens up a space for artists to rethink their production methods through scale. This small-format exhibition offers the opportunity to see lesser-known works by internationally recognized names while also creating a platform to discover new talents. Each piece is an experiment in creativity that is liberated, not limited, by its dimensions. As the size shrinks, the gaze intensifies.
From 1974 to Today
One of the longest-running exhibitions still continuing into the twenty-first century, “Small is Beautiful” was initiated in 1974 by the founders of Flowers Gallery to demonstrate that “big ideas can be expressed in small forms.”
This edition, taking place in the new gallery on Cork Street, carries both a nostalgic and innovative feel — on one hand evoking the avant-garde spirit of the 1970s, while on the other holding a mirror to the micro-universe of contemporary art.
Apartment No:26 Note
The small is not just in size, but in the point of contact. A surface as small as a postcard can contain a story as deep as a universe. Flowers Gallery’s annual ritual reminds us that even the quietest form of art can have a great echo.
