Anna Freeman Bentley “Reflections” in Bloomsbury

As the Apartment No: 26 team, we are opening the door to Canopy Collections at 3 Bloomsbury Place, nestled within Bloomsbury’s characteristic historic texture. Before us is Anna Freeman Bentley’s exhibition “Reflections”, which carries the soul of interior spaces onto paper. Opened at the beginning of March, the exhibition invites us until the end of April into a quiet yet profoundly deep observation.

This exhibition holds a special meaning for art lovers; it is the artist’s first solo show dedicated exclusively to her works on paper and to the motif of reflection, which plays a key role in Freeman Bentley’s practice. With her brushstrokes, the artist depicts not only the spaces she sees, but also the emotional residues those spaces leave in mirrors, glass or shiny surfaces. The texture of paper allows us to feel the fragility and transience of these reflections in a far more intimate tone compared to canvas.

There are no figures in Freeman Bentley’s paintings, yet every corner is filled with human stories. These figureless interiors, composed with a rich and melancholic palette, carry the whispers of the people who have been there before and the lives that have unfolded within them. The expressive brushstrokes heighten the social resonance of the space while inviting the viewer into a poetic process of reinterpretation. By transforming the data she gathers through careful observation into emotional narratives on paper, the artist reminds us that space is not merely a physical structure, but also a repository of memory.

The works of the London-born artist (b. 1982) can be found in prestigious collections around the world, from the Saatchi Collection to the Hôtel Crillon in Paris. With “Reflections”, Freeman Bentley once again maps the emotional landscape of interior spaces in her own city. This exhibition, which runs until 24 April 2026, is a wonderful stop for those who wish to lose themselves in Bloomsbury’s intellectual atmosphere and search for their own past and the stories embedded in the rooms among the reflections.

We are quietly but impressively adding this exhibition to the notes of Apartment No: 26. If your path happens to take you near the British Museum these days, don’t forget to look into one of Freeman Bentley’s mirrors and imagine who was breathing in that room before you.
